In Memoriam

AngelaLongtime Habitat Family Selection Committee Member and Board of Directors volunteer Angela Evans passed away on June 5th, 2013.

Angela served on the Family Selection Committee of Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg, subsequently Manitoba, for a decade. During that time she met with and assisted many families to become Habitat partners and ultimately homeowners. She was a voice of reason and enthusiasm during the discussions about potential partner families. Her advice was consistently thoughtful and insightful. Angela was always willing to take assignments from the Committee to interview and aid prospective homeowners to join our 'family'.

In 2010, Angela joined the Board of Directors, while continuing to serve on the Family Selection Committee. In this new role she participated in the strategic and policy discussions that guide the organization as a whole. Her years serving as legal counsel to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) were invaluable to us given our charitable status and a review that was underway during that time with CRA. At Board level, where discussions can be removed from the intimate nature of our program, Angela kept us grounded and focused on the things that really matter.

AngelaThe obvious outcome of our efforts is selling homes on affordable terms to families that have successfully met all of the qualifications. This brings financial stability to a family while providing them with superior accommodations. Habitat's real value, however, is the impact that stability has on the children of our partner families. Surveys we have done locally and that have been completed nationally by an independent third party consistently show that a very high percentage of the children of Habitat families experience an improvement in their school grades and are more likely to finish high school and gain some post-secondary education than children in like economic circumstances. Similarly, the health of the family improves measurably with fewer visits to the doctor and fewer days missed from school and from work.

Compassion, kindness and caring shone through in all of Angela's work with Habitat. She directly assisted dozens of families, and especially the children of those families, to a brighter, healthier, happier, better future. For that we, and they, will be forever grateful.
