Youth in Philanthropy

Habitat Manitoba's Janice Sells with Gray Academy of Jewish Education staff and students

Habitat Manitoba was invited to a wonderful presentation on the afternoon of May 27th, 2013 by Gray Academy of Jewish Education students involved in the school's Youth in Philanthropy program. Every year, students in the program are given the opportunity to understand the importance of giving back to the community and learn about a variety of not-for-profit organizations. The class of about 35 students is divided into smaller groups that must each choose an area of interest on which to focus. They select from a wide variety of causes such as animal welfare, women's issues, healthcare, poverty, and many more.

We were honoured to receive $200 from this Youth in Philanthropy initiative. Special thanks to teacher Lawrence Goldstine and his students at Gray Academy!

Garden City Collegiate's Youth in Philanthropy Committee had 3 students tour the Fernbank construction site and learn about Habitat. Their interest was to select charities that would give them the biggest impact and to help a charity that doesn't normally receive a lot of YIP grants. Knowing that 100% of their donation would go towards the building program was a significant factor in HFHM being awarded $1000 to purchase a hot water tank for a home.

On April 13, 2013, the Women Build Committee of Habitat for Humanity Manitoba organized The First Annual Amazing Foot Rally.

Participants competed in teams of four for prizes in this new all-day race. On foot, the Amazing Foot Rally was a green way to see Winnipeg, earn points and contribute to the building of a new home for a family in need. The event raised over $9,000 for Habitat Manitoba.

Thank you to the gracious sponsors, all of the participants, and to their supporters.

Special thanks to the Presenting Sponsor Castle Group, Radio Sponsor 102.3 Clear FM, and Venue Sponsor Winnipeg Delta.

It's back! Buy a hammer, build our community

The paper hammers are back at The Home Depot! Purchase a paper hammer for $2 from any participating The Home Depot (THD) outlet from May 30 to July 3 to help build affordable housing and stronger, more sustainable communities. The Home Depot Foundation will match the district with the highest sales, so we need Habitat Manitoba supporters out in full force!

$500 Genworth Scholarship awarded

High Schools for Habitat for Humanity (3H) congratulates Brennan Dugas a graduating student from Dakota Collegiate who is the recipient of the 3H $500 Genworth scholarship. Brennan has been a member of 3H for the past 3 years and has been a leader in each year doing presentations about Habitat, fundraising, and helping to Build. Kirsty Dunlop, the teacher contact who nominated Brennan wrote " Brennan's mature, positive attitude and 'can do' approach has been an asset to the progress and success of our club. Brennan, who has been a reliable and responsible leader, has been an invaluable part of our group. I am confident that Brennan will continue to support Habitat after he graduates from high school. His commitment to social justice and others is admirable." Brennan will be attending the University of Manitoba in the fall and will be taking veterinary sciences.

Dakota Collegiate also deserves mention as their 3H program raised the most money per student. A special thank you to all of the Dakota 3H students for your enthusiastic support!
