High Schools for Global Village!

High Schools for Global Village!Joining a Global Village team is a unique opportunity to leave behind the comforts of home and become fully immersed in a new world. When you participate in a Global Village, you are more than just a tourist; you become the guest of the local culture.

Perhaps that is why teacher Kevin Kitching introduced the program to Springfield Colligate in 2006. Just last summer, a group of Grade 11 and Grade 12 students opted to venture to El Salvador as a Global Village team rather than the standard Europe trip offered to the graduating class.

For two weeks, the students rolled up their sleeves and built a home for a local family of five. They worked alongside the Habitat family and other members of the community and together, under guided construction, laid the foundation, moved and placed cinder blocks, hammered in nails, and built a home for a family in need.

It was hard work. The day would begin at 8 am and the students worked on the build site until 4 pm and often ended the day exhausted. However, it was far from all work no play.

During the lunch break, local kids would come by the build site and challenge the Springfield Collegiate students to a street game of soccer. Weekends were free time, so they were able to explore the town, take in the sights, enjoy the local cuisine, and even hit the beach.

The students gained a greater understanding of development issues, learned a lot about a different culture, and also discovered new things about themselves. According to one student, the experience was life changing.

Previous building experience is not required for a Global Village trip. If you have a sense of adventure, are in good health and willing to work hard, you can join a Global Village team.
