2012 Blitz Build

2012 Blitz BuildIt was two weeks of early mornings, nails, hammers, hard hats, hot days, colourful shirts and hard work. After three consecutive years of holding Habitat for Humanity Manitoba's (HFHM) Blitz Build at the Sir Sam Steele location on Nairn Avenue, HFHM crews and volunteers were a sight to see in the Riverbend area at the entrance of North Main and Fernbank.

In just 12 days, four side-by-side units (eight homes) rose from the already completed foundations. It was a huge attraction for supporters seeing the community working together, full of spirit and passion for a great cause.

The build site's homes will exceed the Power Smart Gold standard and incorporate many other sustainable features. "The energy and water efficiency of all these homes not only makes them environmentally friendly but also more affordable by reducing the daily living costs for our low-income working families," says Sandy Hopkins, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Manitoba.

The Fernbank site is expected to be completed in two years and will be home to 10 side-by-side units (20 homes). These new homes will make for a pleasant entrance into the suburb, replacing an unsightly and unkempt strip of land.

Thank you to the volunteers, build crews, and supporters who worked alongside Habitat families making this year's Blitz Build one we won't forget! Special thanks to the Croatian Catholic Church St Nicholas Tavelich for their hospitality to all of our volunteers.
