Celebrating side by side with the Governor General of Canada

Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg (HFHW) recently celebrated two milestones at its Sir Sam Steele Build site on Nairn Avenue: the building of its 200th home and the honour of building the 2,000th Habitat home for all of Canada.

'Celebrating Side by Side' encompasses the essence of what makes HFHW work: the pride and passion of thousands of volunteers and the financial support from the entire community.

Both landmark homes are being built together as one side by side unit, bringing further meaning to 'Celebrating Side by Side.' "Constructing these homes brings great pride to all our current and past board members and staff, and further acknowledges us as a leader and a driving force in trying to eliminate poverty housing," says Sandy Hopkins, CEO, Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg. "We are served very well by all our partners, volunteers, sponsors and supporters, without whom we could not succeed."

Generous Home Sponsors
Major financial support comes from the homes' two Home Sponsors: Schneider Electric for HFHW's 200th home and The Home Depot Canada Foundation for the Habitat Canada 2,000th home. Habitat for Humanity graciously thanks both for their support along with the many volunteers who help save on construction labour costs through their tireless efforts.

Wall Raising Ceremony
On hand at the ceremony leading up to the Habitat Blitz Build was the Governor General of Canada. His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston, an ardent Habitat supporter praised Habitat and the City of Winnipeg and assisted volunteers from The Home Depot Foundation and Schneider Electric in the ceremonial wall raising of the 2,000th and 200th homes to rousing applause.

The Governor General and Her Excellency, Mrs. Sharon Johnston also spent time talking with the two new homeowners of the landmark homes along with the enthusiastic volunteers and members of Habitat.

Former Governor General, the Right Honourable Ed Schreyer, a longtime advocate of Habitat joined in the celebration of the simultaneous wall-raising of the 200th and 200th homes.
