Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg’s mission is: By mobilizing volunteers and community partners, Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg works with people from all walks of life to build safe, decent, affordable housing for purchase by low-income working families.
Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg is the local affiliate of an international non-profit registered charity committed to eliminating poverty housing and dedicated to making safe, decent and affordable housing available for low-income working families to purchase. Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity International has built over 300,000 homes in 100 countries.
Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg, founded in 1987, has built 179 homes offering our partner families a hand up, not a hand out. Families are able to purchase their homes with a no down payment, interest free mortgage with payments geared to family income rather than the value of the property thus allowing them to build equity in their home.
Monthly mortgage payments received from homeowners are used to purchase new land and to service debt on previous land purchases allowing donations to keep on giving - building more homes in our community in future years. A donation to Habitat is a gift in perpetuity to affordable housing.
When people have access to affordable housing, their hopes and dreams can be renewed. Families plant roots and become proud, connected members of a community. Children can grow in a stable environment, opening a door to a brighter future. Every family that becomes a Habitat homeowner helps to build the foundation for a better Winnipeg.
Each Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg home costs approximately $150,000 to complete and our homes are constructed by volunteers under professional supervision.
Each year, Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg determines how many families it can help based on the financial support received from the community. We are thankful for the many businesses, individuals, churches, foundations and organizations that support Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg’s transformational work – changing lives, changing neighborhoods, and changing our important little part of the world.
A unique source of revenue is the Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg ReStore. Started in 1991, the ReStore sells new, used, and reusable building materials and home furnishings. Proceeds from the ReStore cover 100% of Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg’s administration costs allowing all donated monies to be used for Habitat’s building program. An additional benefit of the ReStore is that 1.5 million pounds of reusable material are diverted from Winnipeg’s landfills annually.
As home construction costs have continued to climb, and the need for affordable housing increases, Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg has developed three major annual fundraising events: Cycle of Hope; House Party & Auction; and Ride Around the Lake. We are also excited to partner with the Muddy Waters 100 to offer an additional cycling event in 2009.
This year (2010) Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg will build seventeen new homes to benefit our Habitat partner families.
Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg will also begin Phase II of our “greenest” ever construction project on the former Sir Sam Steele school site by building 10 homes this year (2010) on the south side of the property facing Nairn Avenue. In total, 32 Habitat families will call the area home by 2011. All homes will be built to both Manitoba Hydro Power Smart Gold Standard and to LEED® Gold or Platinum.
